Project Overview

Replacing Aging Systems Across a District-Wide Education Environment

The Consolidated School District of New Britain needed to replace aging security systems across a complex education environment that included multiple schools and administration buildings.

NYSS supported the district with a large-scale deployment that included Avigilon video security, Acre access control, license plate readers, security operations centers, and dedicated cloud-managed switching and firewalls.

The project was designed to improve visibility, support faster incident review, and create a stronger foundation for managing security across the district.

The Environment

Education environments require security systems that support both everyday operations and critical response needs. For the Consolidated School District of New Britain, the solution needed to work across multiple buildings, serve different user groups, and provide reliable visibility when incidents occurred.

District-Wide Footprint

The deployment supported 14 schools and 3 administration buildings.

High Daily Activity

The system needed to support students, staff, visitors, and district operations.

Multiple Access Needs

Access control had to support different buildings, roles, and permissions.

Incident Response Requirements

The district needed better access to video footage when situations occurred.

Centralized Oversight

Security operations centers were included to support district-wide monitoring and response.

The Challenge

The district had reached a point where the existing system was no longer supporting its needs. After a vandalism incident caused significant damage, the district needed access to reliable video footage, but the existing system provided little usable footage.

The project required more than replacing cameras. NYSS needed to help the district move from an aging system to a more reliable, scalable security environment across schools and administration buildings.

Key Considerations

  • Replacing an aging system across multiple buildings
  • Improving access to usable video footage
  • Supporting faster incident review
  • Managing access control across schools and administration buildings
  • Coordinating a large-scale deployment on an accelerated timeline
  • Supporting security operations centers
  • Building a system that could be managed and supported over time

NYSS Scope of Work

NYSS replaced and upgraded critical security infrastructure across the district, creating a stronger foundation for visibility, access control, and ongoing system management.

System Replacement & Planning

NYSS evaluated the existing environment and developed a deployment approach to replace aging systems across schools and administration buildings.

Video Security

NYSS installed and managed approximately 600 Avigilon cameras to support visibility and incident review across the district.

Access Control

NYSS installed and managed approximately 250 Acre access control readers to support controlled access across district buildings.

License Plate Readers

The project included 10 license plate readers to support visibility around vehicle activity and key exterior areas.

Security Operations Centers

NYSS supported the implementation of two security operations centers to help the district monitor and manage security activity.

Cloud-Managed Switching & Firewalls

Dedicated cloud-managed switching and firewalls were installed and managed to support reliable system performance.

Deployment Management

NYSS coordinated the deployment across multiple schools and administration buildings, completing a major portion of the work ahead of schedule.

Ongoing Support

NYSS continued supporting the deployed systems to help maintain performance and adapt to district needs over time.

Technology Used

NYSS works with trusted technology partners to design systems that fit each client’s environment, goals, and long-term operational needs.

For the Consolidated School District of New Britain, the project included video security, access control, license plate readers, security operations centers, and dedicated network infrastructure.

Avigilon

Avigilon video security technology was used to support visibility across schools, administration buildings, and key district areas.

Acre

Acre access control technology was used to help manage controlled entry across district buildings and support different access needs.

LPR

License Plate Readers

License plate readers were included to support visibility around vehicle activity and exterior areas.

Cloud-Managed Switching & Firewalls

Dedicated cloud-managed switching and firewalls helped support system reliability and ongoing management.

Client Quote

“We were at a point where the existing system had failed us. After a vandalism incident caused significant damage, we had barely any usable video footage. NYSS replaced more than 200 cameras in five weeks and completed the project three weeks ahead of schedule.”
Jesse Johnson Director of Security, Consolidated School District of New Britain

Operational Value

The completed project helped the Consolidated School District of New Britain move from an aging system to a more reliable and manageable district-wide security environment.

Improved Visibility

The Avigilon video security deployment supported better visibility across schools, administration buildings, and key district areas.

Faster Incident Review

The upgraded system helped support faster access to usable video footage when incidents occurred.

Controlled Access

Acre access control readers helped support managed entry across district buildings.

Centralized Security Operations

Two security operations centers supported more coordinated monitoring and response across the district.

Stronger System Foundation

Dedicated cloud-managed switching and firewalls helped support reliability and long-term system performance.
